John Kapelos is an actor’s actor. One of the classic “I-know-their-face-but-not-their-name” types of artists. If, like many humans born in the 80s and 90s, you grew up on John Hughes movies, you likely will have seen him in three classics – as Rudy in Sixteen Candles; Dino in Weird Science; and – arguably his most recognizable role – Carl the Janitor in The Breakfast Club.
An alumnus of Second City Chicago, Kapelos has appeared in a host of films and TV shows including Roxanne, Internal Affairs, The Deep End of The Ocean, Legally Blonde, Phil The Alien, Snowbuddies, and, most recently, in Guillermo Del Toro’s Academy Award winner The Shape of Water. His television work is even more extensive with appearances on CSI, Criminal Minds, Crossing Jordan, Without a Trace, Seinfeld, Gilmore Girls, Angel, ER, The X-Files, Desperate Housewives, Judging Amy, The Dead Zone, Dead Like Me, Frasier, iCarly, Monk, Chuck, Cold Case, Psych, Justified, NCIS, Boston Legal, Queer as Folk, Modern Family, and a starring role on Detective Knight. He has two new films being released this month – the indie comedies The Unicorn and Love Shot, the latter of which he also serves as executive producer. He is also a musician and has released an album of humourous Jazz tunes called Too Hip For The Room.
